Of Tales Past

You’ve heard the songs of minstrels,
And read tales of ancient lore,
Of brave warriors on battle steeds,
And heroes from the days of yore.

Yet, this is not a tale of myth,
Of darkness against the light,
I tell a tale not well known;
Of Dragon and brave Knight.

The Knight he crossed the emerald plains,
Black steed between his thighs,
His bright blade flashed o’er his head,
As he roared forth battle cry.

The Dragon took flight on mighty wings,
Knight’s challenge he accepted,
Landing up on the battlefield,
Tail thrashing as he descended.

Lashing out with deadly claws,
The Ancient warns brave Knight to yield,
Knight falls back before onslaught,
As fiery breath breaks over shield.

Throughout the day their battle raged,
Impasse reached ‘neath moonlight,
The Ancient, bored with fracas paused,
Entreating gallant Knight.

Inclining head, his nostrils flared,
Knight caught by Dragon's stare,
The earth it moved beneath his feet,
As visions in mind did flare.

Visions from forgotten times,
Whirled throughout Knight’s mind,
Of days when Ancient‘s dwelled in peace,
In harmony with mankind.

He saw the Ancient in his youth,
A man walked at his side,
Scratching ‘neath his sapphire scales,
The man's eyes gleamed with pride.

He watched the ritual binding both,
Beneath the moon’s soft light,
A union of both mind and blood,
Pairing Ancient to his Knight.

The vision ended as Ancient blinked,
To his knees the Knight did fall,
Heart hammered loud within his chest,
Answering the sacred call.

With voices chanting on the breeze,
Around them magic flowed,
Forging deep eternal bond,
That time nor death could erode.

And with the dawning, side by side
Deep laughter filled their nights,
Exploring each other and the land,
Ancient Dragon and his Knight.
